Manicure Monday

Todays Manicure Monday kicks off a special series we’re doing with FOAM Magazine! For the next couple of weeks we’re going to be featuring a different O’Neill Girl from our team and a nail trend she’s into!

What we love about this Mermaid Tail manicure are the variations of bright summer colors and that it features a unique color blending technique that can be used in many other manicures. Learn how to do this Mermaid Tail manicure yourself by following the steps below and be sure to check out more info on Kendal, our Graphic Designer in FOAM Magazines exclusive blog on her.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
-Orly Bonder Basecoat (optional)
-Deep Periwinkle Blue nail polish
-Sea Foam Teal nail polish
-Jade Beetle Blue nail polish
-Iridescent Sapphire Blue nail polish
-Yellow Glitter nail polish
-Purple Glitter nail polish
-Clear Glitter nail polish
-Clear coat nail polish

HOW-TO DO IT YOURSELF:

Step 1: Step up all your supplies and unscrew each of the nail polish tops so that you can easily access them. Start off by applying the Orly Bonder as your basecoat to all your nails (this will prevent nail color from chipping or wearing off). Let dry for a couple minutes.

Step 2: Paint all of your nails with the Deep Periwinkle Blue nail polish. Let dry. We waited about 10 minutes.

Step 3: On your index and middle finger you will be dividing your nail into three half moon shaped sections. Start at your cuticle and paint your first half moon shape with the Sea Foam Teal nail polish. The middle half moon will be painted with the Jade Beetle Blue nail polish, and the last half moon will be your Iridescent Sapphire Blue nail polish. Let half way dry. We waited about 4 minutes.

Step 4 & 5: At this step we will be blending the colors together using our glitter colors. Start by applying the Yellow Glitter nail polish at the base of your nail (cuticle area) and work out pulling it to the tip of the nail. Next apply the Purple Glitter nail polish to the middle of your nail and pull out to the tip of your nail. Allow your nail polish to half dry again. We waited about 4 minutes.

Step 6: Apply Clear Glitter over the entire nail to smooth out any unevenness that may have occurred.

Jen GilanFarr Wins the 2012 Byerly Toe Jam

Photo Credit: John Lipscomb of JD Diamond Photography

Congratulations to O’Neill Girls Wake Skate team rider Jen GilanFarr who won the Womens Event at the 2012 Byerly Toe Jam! It all went down on Saturday April 21, where the best wakeskaters in the world threw down everything they had at the Wake and Gap finals of the 9th Annual Rockstar Byerly Toe Jam presented by O’Neill.

O’Neill Girls is beyond proud to have Jen as a part of our team and we’ve enjoyed watching her progress and push the womens side of sport. Last year at Nationals in Reno, Jen was the first girl to land a kickflip in a contest! And did you see the video we have of Jen landing a Varial Flip (first girl to do so)! We were able to catch up with Jen right after the Byerly event and get a quick Q&A in, enjoy:

How long have you been for pushing a girls division at this event?

Before I even got into the competitive wakeskate scene in 2007, the girls were pushing for a division in the Byerly Toe Jam. We have always wanted to be a part of the core wakeskate event. A few of us would compete against the guys every year, but it ends up being a pretty expensive statement to make when you know your chances of making into the next round is very very small.”

What were the major challenges in making it happen?

“I didn’t even have a chance to beg this year for the division. Silas Thurman called me up and asked if I wanted to have a girls division in The Wakeskate Tour they were working on, and if I wanted to head it up. The answer was an immediate yes, and the next challenge was rounding up 8 girls. Stop #1, The Byerly Toe Jam, was especially difficult to round up girls for because the gap ended up being pretty big. Most of us rarely winch, and a few girls have never even hit a gap. So it took some convincing to get them to enter in the contest and hit a 6 foot drop clearing 6-8 feet of land. We got really lucky and everything came together last second. I’m really proud of all the girls that rallied and charged the gap!”

Who was your biggest supporter through this process?

“Silas Thurman for seeing the need for the women to be part of such a progressive event if we were ever going to get anywhere. I’d also like to thank the rest of The Wakeskate Tour crew, Ben and Ryan, along with Byerly and Dishman for including us in Stop #1: The Byerly Toe Jam. Not only did they include us, but it’s the first time in the states we have seen prize money for the women’s wakeskate division”

Toe Jam Lady Skaters (from left to right): Renee Jaquess, Mandy Gagnon, Jen Hettler, Jen GilanFarr, Cassandra Scott, Britt Fletcher, Nadine Klaering

What was it like competing against the girls and not the boys?

“It was refreshing, we are all good friends and supportive of each other so it was really fun. It pushed me a lot harder riding with girls around the same skill level. I think we are going to see a lot more progression in the women’s riding this year with the help of The Wakeskate Tour. It’s pushing us in a new direction, all of the girls are really amped and anxious for the next event. Hopefully we will see more girls winching and branching out into other areas of the sport.”

How did it feel to win the first ever girls division?

“Win or loose, it was so cool to see everything come together. I feel like everything I have invested in wakeskating over the last several years is finally paying off, and I couldn’t be happier. I can’t even explain my stoke right now, but so many people to thank from the guys that built and ran the contest to all the girls that rallied. Looking forward to four more stops, it’s going to be an amazing year!!”

About Jen: Jen’s ascent to the top of women’s professional wakeskating was fast, if not especially furious. With a closet full of trophies, she swept the WWA World Championships the last 4 years in a row. She is the first and only woman to land a varial flip and a wake-to-wake shuv, and one of the few with all-around skills behind the boat, on rails, at the cable or exploring terrain with a winch. Her passion for the sport goes beyond water time, throwing Girls Ride Days and Clinics; also helping build and operate Throw It Down, a global site focused on the progression of women’s wake.

Not only does she rip on a wakeskate but her attitude, love, and passion towards the sport makes it all the more exciting. There are few who love being on the water as much as Jen, and it shows. Regardless of the weather, you can find this girl on the lake almost every morning, rain or shine, she lives for it. Talented on and off the water, Jen is also an accomplished graphic artist, and designed the board graphics for her 2009 & 2011 Integrity Signature model wakeskate.

Manicure Monday

Todays Manicure Monday kicks off a special series we’re doing with FOAM Magazine! For the next couple of weeks we’re going to be featuring a different O’Neill Girl from our team and a nail trend she’s into!

What we love about this Galaxy Grunge manicure is that you can wear it two ways. One look could be edgy grunge nails, and another, just by simply adding some tiny white dots on to the last step could be considered a galaxy look! Do whatever makes you the happiest! Learn how to do this Galaxy Grunge manicure yourself by following the steps below and be sure to check out more info on Kacee, our Social Media Manager in FOAM Magazines exclusive blog on her.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

-Black Nail Polish
-Navy Blue Nail Polish
-Hot Pink Nail Polish
-Orange Nail Polish
-Foam Green Nail Polish
-Pure Acetone
-Small Flat Brush
-Orly Bonder Basecoat (optional)
-Clear nail polish

HOW-TO DO IT YOURSELF:

Step 1: Get all your supplies lined up and ready to use; loosen the tops of each nail polish and pour some Acetone in a small container. Start off by applying the Orly Bonder as your basecoat to all your nails (this will prevent nail color from chipping or wearing off). Let dry for a couple minutes.

Step 2: Apply a single layer of black nail polish and let dry. We waited about 10 minutes.

Step 3: This begins the layering process of colors. Using your small paint brush (which puts a thinner layer of color on your nail in comparison to your regular nail polish brush) paint half of each nail with the Orange nail polish and the other half of each nail Navy Blue and let dry. We waited about 10 minutes.

Step 4: Now using your Foam Green nail polish paint an even layer over all of your nails. Let dry. We waited about 10 minutes.

Step 5: Repeat Step 3 by switching the light and dark colors of laying so that you will now be painting half of your nail Hot Pink nail polish (on the side where the Navy used to be) and vise versa. The other half of the nail will be painted Navy blue (where the Orange used to be). Let dry. We waited about 10 minutes.

Step 6: After your last layer of nail polish has dried (no top coat), dip your paint brush into the Acetone and wiggle the brush around on your nail to reveal layered colors. Repeat this step until you have your nail exactly how you want it. Tip: Be sure to wipe off the excess Acetone off of your brush because you don’t want it bleeding all over your nails (eating away all your hard work).

Step 7: Clear coat that bad boy to seal in the deal!

Malia Manuel with some of her most recent wins

O’Neill Girls team rider Malia Manuel battled head-to-head with some of the best female surfers at stop No. 4 of 7 on the 2012 ASP Women’s World Championship Tour, the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic and placed 2nd!

Round 1 : Malia came up short in her round 1 heat to Sally Fits and was forced to surf the do or die elimination round 2.

Round 2: Malia was matched up against fellow team mate Sage Erickson in a close fought heat and came out on top in the tough afternoon conditions.

Round 3: Malia was matched up against four time world champ Steph Gilmore once again in round 3 and came out guns blazing with a 15.00 point total. Malia skipped round 4 and set to surf on the final day of the event and yet another quarter final birth.

“I’m really relieved to get a good result here at Dee Why,” Manuel said. “I’m happy to move up the ratings. It’s a great confidence boost going into the next three events. I’m really stoked to make a final in my rookie year. I hope the battle for ASP Rookie Of The Year goes down to the last contest. It’s really close between me and Lakey (Peterson). I’m not going to count her out.”
