Last year’s winner, Tatjana Maul from Holland, has seen her life change since winning the first One Way Runway: “I’ve been on an amazing roller coaster since I won the competition – flying around the world to different countries doing lots of awesome things like photoshoots, video shoots and runway shows. I have met so many great new people, made loads of new friends and gained so much experience modeling.”

Tatjana offered this advice to prospective entrants: “Just be yourself – be proud of who you are and let your confidence shine through. Also don’t forget to really enjoy the experience and to have a lot of fun!”

Fun Times In Palm Springs With PacSun

Last weekend, a few of us from O’Neill were invited to attend and run a booth at Pac Sun’s Golden State of Mind Party at the Ace Hotel & Swim Club in Palm Springs. Could we have asked for a venue any more awesome and totally our style than the Ace? Nope, don’t think so. The weather was perfect, the DJs were rockin’ out, and the O’Neill table never had a chance to stop. We gave away custom trucker hats for everyone at the party using lots of spray paint, stencils, sharpies and our improv drawing skills. I was whipping out hat after hat, completely coating my left hand in spray paint (it took two days to finally come clean), and giving everyone a little something that was just for them. No two were the same and people seemed pretty stoked that their hat could be and say whatever they wanted. Ben from the men’s team was there too, doodling away with his stash of sharpies on more hats at the other end of our set up.

We also raffled off gear with the help of our event guru Shaun, our intern Matt, and my boy Trav. We gave away towels, beach umbrellas, bikinis, headphones, board shorts and our coffee table book, and the best part was when the guys won bikinis. Rather than jump into the pool wearing them, they came back the next hour with the hopes a girl or two would win board shorts so they could trade. Probably the better choice, although we would have had some pretty funny pictures if they’d kept them.

Once the day party was done, and most everyone was sporting a trucker hat from our table
(check out pics of our hats on PacSuns Facebook page), we packed up shop and enjoyed some sliders and tacos from the Lime Truck. What a great day, what a great weekend, and it was all totally worth the AWFUL traffic we were stuck in all the way out there. Thanks again PacSun!

Review of O’Neill SEA Paddle 2011

Newest member of O’Neill Mens team takes 26.5-mile race in 3 hours and 56 minutes, ahead of more than 200 racers. Rob claimed first place overall with a lightning-quick time of 3 hours and 56 minutes. This is Rob’s 20th professional victory of his four-year racing career and fourth as a member of O’Neill’s athlete roster.

Rojas came into the race training on a new 14-foot board, a required size for the elite race. This new board size, or New York City’s elements, didn’t deter the 37 year old, who finished under the iconic Brooklyn Bridge well ahead of Annabel Anderson (4 hours, 13 minutes) and Thomas Gallagher (4 hours, 16 minutes). Set against the backdrop of midtown Manhattan, the Bronx and Brooklyn, more than 200 elite and amateurs started from Pier 40 on the West Side, making their way north around the island, finishing on the East Side.

“The O’Neill SEA Paddle NYC was very, very challenging, but well worth it,” added Rojas. “Crossing that finish line at the Brooklyn Bridge meant a great deal to me. I wanted to perform well in New York City, make my sponsors proud and win for two important causes – autism and SEA. It’s great to accomplish all three goals at once.”

Some of Rojas’ previous wins came at the 2010 Hennessey’s International Paddleboard Championships in San Diego, the Hennessey’s US Championships, Hobie Hennessey’s Waterman Challenge, Waterman’s Sunscreen Paddle for Humanity, Catalina Challenge relay and Tahoe-Nalu Distance Race.

“We knew that Rob was one of the best paddleboarders out there, so this win doesn’t come as a big surprise, but it’s still great to see him claim a big win in New York,” said O’Neill’s Steve Ward. “No matter the sport, there’s something very impressive about elite athletes who can perform at their best on the world’s biggest stage.”

The O’Neill SEA Paddle features both an elite and amateur division, all in the name of charity. Last year, the NYC paddle raised a total of $400,000, with proceeds distributed amongst Surfer’s Environmental Alliance and several Autism organizations.

Later that night, O’Neill will hosted a ‘White Water Evening,’ where guests were encouraged to wear all-white with the Brooklyn Bridge and lower Manhattan as a backdrop. The White Water Evening will also offer memorabilia for auction to benefit event charities.

During the O’Neill SEA Paddle NYC, O’Neill has featured race jerseys made with 30+ UV protection that have been given the International Seal of Recommendation by The Skin Cancer Foundation. These UV protection lycra products, along with the highly popular Hybrid Series shorts, will be prominently featured at all upcoming SUP events hosted by O’Neill, including the conclusion of this Summer’s Tahoe Cup Series. O’Neill SEA Paddle NYC 2011

NEW YORK, NY (August 1, 2011) – 11 days remain until stand-up paddlers from around the world converge on Manhattan’s waterways for the 5th Annual SEA Paddle NYC. As participants continue to train for the 28-mile charity paddle around Manhattan, organized by Surfers’ Environmental Alliance (SEA) and O’Neill, key figures in the surf, stand-up paddle and entertainment industries have come on board in support of SEA and the paddle’s eight autism beneficiaries.

O’Neill will present the O’Neill SEA Paddle NYC, taking place on August 12th in the shadows of the world’s most famous skyline. Featuring both a charity amateur race and professional competition, the 26.5-mile race will visit some of New York City’s most celebrated landmarks, including the Brooklyn Bridge and Hudson River. Last year, the NYC paddle raised a total of $400,000, with proceeds distributed amongst Surfer’s Environmental Alliance and several Autism organizations. Several hundred competitors are expected to participate in the 2011 event, including 50-100 of the world’s best paddlers from around the world.

O’Neill SUP Team Rider Rob Rojas

Adding a California touch to the festivities, O’Neill will host a Beach Party at the South Street Seaport’s Water Taxi Beach for those who want to support event charity partners and watch each race’s conclusion from Pier 40 on the East River. That night, the venue will transform into the ‘White Water Evening,’ where guests are encouraged to wear all-white with the Brooklyn Bridge and lower Manhattan as a backdrop.

During SEA Paddle NYC, O’Neill will feature race jerseys made with 30+ UV protection that have been given the International Seal of Recommendation by The Skin Cancer Foundation. The Seal is awarded to sun protection products with a minimum Sun Protection Factor (SPF) 15 or an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) of 30. These UV protection lycra products, along with the highly popular Hybrid Series shorts, will be prominently featured at all upcoming SUP events.

“When Jack O’Neill created the first wetsuit, the brand made its mark in watersports, and supporting stand up paddle is another example of our commitment over the last six decades,” said O’Neill’s Senior VP of Sales and Marketing, Steve Ward. “With the increased popularity of SUP, it’s great to see the sport take off from both a casual and competitive standpoint. Adding SUP events, sun-protection products and prominent athletes to our brand roster makes perfect sense and exposes the sport to even more people around the world.”

About Surfers’ Environmental Alliance (SEA)

SEA’s goals are achieved through grassroots activism, community involvement, education and humanitarian efforts. Meet Alice, the U.S. One Way Runway Finalist!

Alice Ivan is the United States finalist to compete in the One Way Runway Contest in Ibiza! We did a brief interview with her before she leaves to compete in the final Runway competition!

Tell us a little about yourself.

I live in California and I’m attending Cal State Long Beach to earn my degree in communicative disorders. I want to become a speech language pathologist. When I’m not in school I like to stay active. I swim, play soccer, volleyball, tennis. I love to cliff jump (which she will be doing in the competition), and skim board. My parents were both born in Romania so I speak Romanian. The last time I visited was 2008. It’s such a beautiful country and I want to go back soon to visit.

What was your first response when you found out about becoming one of the finalists?

When I listened to the voice mail I shrieked! Thank goodness no one was home. I wasn’t sure if it was real. I called back and I realized I really did win and it wasn’t just a joke!

What do you friends think?

My friends are so excited for me. Some of them don’t believe me, but I told them I would text them pictures from the runway!

What are you looking forward to the most through this experience?

Walking the runway! I have never walked a runway before.

Best of luck Alice and have a great time!
