O’Neill surf pro, Malia Manuel, knows first hand what it means to experience both triumph and fear in her professional career.

In any sport, predictability can’t be calculated. As much as we train, knowing what will happen next is impossible, especially when Mother Nature calls the shots. The scariest moment in my career was when I split my ear in half in Costa Rica. I fell on a wave and it felt like I blew out my ear drum.  I didn’t know if it was the nose of the board or the fin that hit me, but I was stunned and in extreme pain. Luckily, the damage was only cosmetic!  I ended up with 14 stitches in my ear lobe.

My most proud moment was getting crowned “Rookie of the Year” for last year’s ASP Women’s World Tour and getting inducted alongside the past winners who are all so talented.  I was surrounded in a room with all the best surfers in the world and past legends. It was a dream come true.

In this episode, the crew move into their new home and look ahead to a season of epic surf, competition, parties, and yeah…some drama. Professional athletes. Where do they get their motivation to stay continuously fit? We say it’s all in the music and the outfit. O’Neill surf pro, Malia Manuel, gives us the lowdown on her workout playlist to keep her on point no matter the activity.

With surfing, or any professional sport, staying in tip top shape is key to a better performance. It’s definitely tough staying on a consistent workout schedule when traveling, but I always make sure to make time for a run or a quick yoga session.

Although, I can’t do it without a great playlist. Right now, I’m really into Ellie Goulding’s Anything Could Happen, Rihanna’s Right Now featuring David Guetta, and will.i.am.’s Scream & Shout, just to name a few! I love anything with a good beat.

So there you have it! The quest to be the best surfer in the world and a little dance music to keep your workout motivation strong.
